Coeur d'Alene Event - June 21st, 2012
Join More Than Sport to give back to the Coeur d'Alene community! We are excited to partner with The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center and local Coeur d'Alene Triathlete, Derek Garcia who is battling testicular cancer.
Joan Kroc had a clear vision in mind when she bequeathed The Salvation Army with the largest gift ever given to a private charity: give all individuals an equal opportunity to grow natural gifts and talents through access to state-of-the-art recreational facilities.
Through The Kroc Scholarship Program, those who are unable to afford a Kroc membership receive a discount on membership fees. Currently 26% of The Kroc Center’s 17,000 members receive a scholarship, and over 10,000 scholarships have been awarded to date. Through the Scholarship Program, individuals who in the past were unable to access any help, now have access to fitness equipment and training as well as lifestyle wellness classes.
Derek Garcia, husband and father of two sons, took up triathlon six years ago and turned professional in January of 2012. His first professional race, Ironman New Orleans 70.3, he finished 16th out of forty pro men. Shortly after this Derek was diagnosed with testicular cancer. It has been a true test, but he is determined to be back on the start line as soon as possible. He remains positive, being surrounded by the community of Coeur d'Alene and has expressed that he truly believes that he is not fighting alone. It is now a goal of the Garcia family to reach others with their message of hope and determination, and to help lead others to early detection of cancer.
